Amber Bitcoin Purchases

For this project we used Teresa Torres' Continuous Discovery framework to understand how we could meet the business outcome of increasing Bitcoin purchase volumes in the Amber app

Role

End-to-end product design

Brand

amber.app

Year

2022

Intro

The team aimed to boost Bitcoin purchases. As a Product Designer, I pinpointed opportunities through user research, ensuring value for Amber customers. We had identified a potential to assist Bitcoiners in buying during price dips

Questions and Observations

To frame product issues, I started with questions and observations about the product. I used the [situation], [response], [business or experience problem] structure to stay attuned to both user and business needs.

When there is a dip, individuals feel more encouraged to buy bitcoin (FOMO). If the user hasn't allocated funds to their fiat wallet then they make a choice to pay PayId/card fee or deposit fee free via EFT (3-5 biz days) and risk missing the dip. This discourages users from buying on Amber.
When there is hype around btc (or a dip), users experience FOMO and are highly motivated to purchase BTC. If a user has limited cashflow they feel they're missing out or they may use a credit facility to buy at the price they want and accept cash advance fees.

Assumptions

We believe that by notifying users of dips
for
two of our user cohorts
will
encourage more one-time purchases and help us get closer to biz outcome

User Research

I began by reviewing data from previous user interviews and customer feedback to understand needs, desires, and challenges. I also invited 20 customers (through Intercom) for brief discussions about their Bitcoin buying habits. These interviews, conducted on Google Meet, were cataloged in Dovetail for analysis.

Snapshot of collected opportunities

Opportunity Solution Tree

I used the Opportunity Solution Tree process designed by Teresa Torres. I worked with the team to brainstorm solutions based on prioritised opportunities.

Opportunity Solution Tree

Usability Review

To grasp the user's Bitcoin-buying journey on Amber, I reviewed its usability and examined fiat deposit and withdrawal processes, noting WOW moments, pain points, and opportunities.

Benchmarking

I benchmarked competitors to discern industry standards and identify enhancements for Amber's purchase experience, also revealing new opportunities.
